One parchment leaf in good condition with wear only to the calligraphed initials from a probably Spanish gradual of the first half of the sixteenth century (1500-1550) beginning with the winter Temporale. Owned by Mark Hill’s father, D. E. Hill, and inherited by Mark Hill.
Contents: chant of end of offertory and communion for feast of St. Thomas of Canterbury, then chant of beginning of introit for Sunday in the octave of Christmas.
Measurements: leaf 53.3 x 36.2 cm with 6 red five-line staves per page made with a rastrum, and black square notation, with custodes. Recto side (hair side): writing surface 43 x 26 cm [distance between outer penciled lines 24.9 cm], stave height 4.5 cm. Verso (flesh) side: writing surface 43 x 25 cm [distance between outer penciled lines 26.5], stave height 4.7 cm. Two parallel penciled lines to right and left of writing surface. Two calligraphed initials on f. 38v.Possible preceding gatherings:
• If gathering signature is a ‘C’ then 11 unnumbered leaves + A gathering of 12 leaves + B gathering of 12 leaves + first two leaves of C gathering, then this leaf. Would begins with introductory material – a title page, approval of bishop, calendar? Then gradual begins with first Sunday in Advent.
• [Most likely] If gathering signature is an ‘E’ then 3 unnumbered leaves + A B C D gatherings, each with 8 leaves + first two leaves of E gathering, then this leaf- Other Editors
