Description

Six large leaves containing antiphons and hymns, primarily related to the Feast of the Trinity. The fragment appears to be the final section of the original manuscript. Although it is referred to as a "missal" in the Kelvin Smith Library documentation, the nature of its musical content suggests it is more accurately an antiphonary.

Two foliations in arabic numerals in upper right by later hands. The hymn has been modified to conform to the 1632 Urban VII revisions. The use of "commemoration" antiphons on Trinity may be a Franciscan practice; compare, for example, HR-Hf Cod. F Nr. 6.

The final page of the fragment contains both a typed and a handwritten note on the fragment's provenance. Both read: "From the old convent of Santiago Tlatelulco Mexico 1690 [in the handwritten version this may be 1670.] Founded by Pedro de Gante supposed to be the child of Chas V of Spain. Puebla March 8 1898." The handwritten version adds "F. S. Borton". An F.S. Borton was a Methodist missionary in Mexico who collected manuscripts there for the "Mission Inn" in Riverside, CA, and as gifts for various other entities.
