Description

Large leaf containing Antiphons for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. At the bottom of both sides, added annotations read: "From the Library of Stanley Slotkin, founder of Abbey Rents. Circa 1150," offering information about previous ownership and the date assigned to it by Slotkin. The use of five-line staves suggests a Spanish or Spanish-influenced origin; it is likely (despite Slotkin's twelfth-century date) to be from the 16th century, given its size, script, and decoration. (A date of March 5, 1964 also appears in the upper right of the fragment--possibly the date of either Slotkin's purchase or sale of the fragment.)
Though only a few chants are present, they are suggestive of a liturgy related to central Spain: the use of "Nos autem" as the first responsory of the second Nocturn (for Invention of the Cross) is also found in E-SA, a 15th century antiphoner from Salamanca, while the partial antiphon text visible on the page is also found (in the same liturgical position) in a printed breviary from Madrid but otherwise rarely attested.
