- Summary
- Folio from a large-format liturgical manuscript with square notation on red four-line staves. Contains propers for Marian votive masses, starting with the communion chant Beata viscera mariae virginis and continuing with the Introit and Gradual for masses between Purification and Advent.
- Description
-
This parchment folium from a Dominican gradual, preserves two sides of notated chants for Marian votive masses. It is in square notation on four-line red staves. Decorative initials (“S,” “B,” and "V") are painted with red and blue pen flourishes. The parchment shows signs of wear and minor pigment loss, but the musical text is generally well preserved.
The recto opens with the communion Beata viscera mariae virginis...
The introit Salve sancta parens enixa puerpera regem..., follows with a rubric specifying: “A purificatione usque ad adventum. Officii.” The verso continues with the gradual Benedicta et venerabilis es virgo maria...The format and hand suggest the fragment originated in late-medieval Italy. The gradual chants are rubricated with R, which may (but need not) indicate a Dominican provenance.
