- Description
-
This source comprises several non-contiguous folia from a late liturgical manuscript. Of the preserved material, only four folios contain musical notation. The leaves are foliated inconsistently, with at least two hands contributing to the numbering (e.g., 1r = f.54r; 2r = f.32r), and some folia remain unnumbered. Musical notation is in black square neumes on red five-line staves. The script appears to be a late humanistic hand, consistent with chant books from the 16th or early 17th century.
The musical notation is different on the two notated leaves. "1" has six staves, with custodes pointing downward, while on "3" there are four staves and the custodes point upward; the clef is also narrower on "3". Both folios have a Spanish appearance, but the text hand is slightly different. Additionally, "1" preserves a mass chant, while "3" contains an office chant; if the two folios indeed belonged at one time to the same book, it may have been a miscellany assembled for a particular feast or rite.
