- Description
-
Single folio from manuscript on parchment, containing chants and readings for the Office of St. Agnes. Written in Gothic script, in two-column layout, with red rubrics and initials. Notation is in black Hufnagel neumes on tetragrams, utilizing both early C and F clefs (the F line is marked in red). The shoulder-side trimming results in some text loss. Seemingly reused as a book cover, perhaps for accounts: several later annotations contain calculations.
The noted breviary is monastic cursus (readings ten through twelve are labelled--the ninth is "omelia lectionis eiusdem"--with one visible antiphon for "cantica."). The selection of responsories and antiphons does not suggest a particular order or place of origin. The script appears early- to mid-thirteenth century, with many uncial d's but a few round Rs, ct and st ligatures, and inconsistent use of ampersands and tironian "et". The readings regularly contain a mark for pauses or breaths, shaped like a small "7". Musical notation is small, narrow early Hufnagel-style neumes, on a staff seemingly done in drypoint and gone over in a faint, largely faded greyish ink for most lines and a still-visible red for the F line.
