Two fragments, apparently from the same source but from different folios, preserving Marian antiphons and partial hymn texts.
Liturgical Occasions

De BMV, Common of Virgins, Common of Confessors

Description

Two fragments, apparently from the same source but from different folios. Much of the musical and textual material is faded and difficult to read. Chant written in black square notation on red tetragrams. Text in Gothic script. Rubricated, with simple red and penwork initials. Verso is faded.

One fragment preserves several Marian antiphons, possibly for use as suffrages during Advent (one antiphon is the O antiphon "O virgo virginum"). The other fragment appears to be from a hymnal, and includes partial texts for a hymn for the Common of Virgins and the hymn Iste Confessor (apparently included twice with different melodies.)

Appearance suggests an origin in Northern France or the Low Countries, probably in the 15th century. A note dating from later in the fragment's history appears to give accounts for the months of "février" and "mars", suggesting the fragment made its way to a French-speaking area as a book binding.
