Summary
Responsorial (bifolio). Partially mensural notation on red five-line staff (isolated diamond shape notes).
Liturgical Occasions

Trinity Sunday; Corpus Christi; Summer Histories (De Sapientia, De Job). 320 x 230-260 mm; written surface 285 x 200 mm.

Description

This bifolio contains cantor parts (incipits and responsory verses) for parts of Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi, and summer histories. The back folio is labelled 7 (recto) and 8 (verso), suggesting this was the outer bifolio of the first (8-folio) choir in its original volume; on the front "can" is visible (for "cantor"?), as well as a cross and a pencil addition "2 (?) Anthiphonae".
Text in black ink and written with the appearance of 16/17th-century print (wide, flat serifs, straight lines, exaggerated ligatures.) Music on red five-line staves, in square notation with some rhythmic aspects (use of lozenge-shaped notes on unstressed syllables.
Large red initials and red rubrics, likewise in a print-like "font."
The written hand is somewhat reminiscent of Flemish books; the hand of the pencil additions also suggests that, by the 20th century, the book was in Germany or the Low Countries, possibly as part of a binding.
The ordering of the responsories for Trinity is concordant with that of E-SA 6, from Salamanca; the other chants do not have distinctive concordances.

Described by library as a Gradual (though it is a responsorial), and dated to the 16th century.

Presented by Colonel W.G.Scully. Redpath Library, McGill University, April 1944.
