Summary

Antiphonal, one leaf, probably Italian. Square notation in brown ink on red four-line staff. 432x301 mm., writing surface 346x209 mm

Description

One vellum leaf from an antiphoner, probably Italian ; numbered 77 on recto and 78 on verso in the outer margin, in Arabic numerals in grey ink (possibly an early modern addition?). Simple one-line red initials, with no other decoration. Dated by the library to the early 16th century, but quite possibly earlier.

Ruling in red marking out the lines for the text, and double vertical ruling on each side marking an area for initials.

Small, neat square notation on a four-line red staff. The staff lines are in the same ink as the ruling, so the ruling for the text looks like a fifth staff line but it is not used for the music. There are some diamond-shaped noteheads indicating possible mensural notation. Check-mark shaped custos.

Antiphons for use per annum.

Described by the library in 2018 as follows:

"One leaf, on vellum, in latin. Early 16th century, possibly Italian. Red ink small initials. Light-brown ink in the text below the five-line, red ink drawn, staves which contain musical notation. Text and staves are bound by red ink drawn double bars. 432x301 mm., writing surface 346x209 mm. The number 77, in light-brown ink, appears on the right margin of the recto side.
