- Description
-
Early thirteenth-century legendary and theological miscellany from Kloster Diessen. The original manuscript began with Engelhardt of Langheim's life of Saint Mechthild of Diessen (d. 1160.) The vita concludes with the hymn Meritis celsam (AH 43:414), likely a contrafact of the hymn Ut queant laxis.
A late 15th-century addition consists of a libellus containing an incomplete office for Mechthild of Diessen. It seems that this libellus, housed in a blank cover, was once inserted between folios 28v and 29, at the end of the vita, interrupting the hymn Meritis celsam. This libellus was subsequently removed and relocated to the beginning of the book, where it was renumbered as folios I-VII, inclusive of the two folios that comprise the cover.
This index records the Roman numeral foliation of the libellus (with cover) as folios A1-7 and the foliation of the Hymn Meritis celsam as B28v-29/34, reflecting the gap in foliation resulting from its removal.
The final folio of the original manuscript, indexed as B82v, transmits an added neumed German phrase, transcribed by Henrike Laehnemann as "Vnuerschaydenleich auf ein gancz end und an alles geili."
