- Summary
- Antiphonal, one leaf, Italian, mid-15th century. 530 x 350 mm. Square notation in black ink on red four-line staff.
- Liturgical Occasions
Sabbato in Hebd. 4. Adv.; Antiphonae Maiores.
- Description
Single leaf from an Italian antiphonal. Based on the liturgy, probably Dominican.
Although these antiphons occur individually for various uses in Advent in different sources, the order seen here and the combination of psalm incipits and antiphons appears in Dominican sources for the Saturday in the fourth week of Advent. Dominican sources also have a similar ordering of feasts, proceeding from the fifth psalm antiphon for the 4th Saturday of Advent to the O antiphons. It therefore seems likely that the chants should be assigned to Lauds of the fourth Saturday in Advent in a book for Dominican use; absent any other information about the provenance, however, this remains conjecture.
