Introit of Pentecost.

Description

Page opening the Introit of Pentecost from an Italian Gradual used by the Olivetan order.
Text in an Italian Southern Textualis hand. Square notation in black ink on red four-line staff, four per page. Faint lines of division present. Custodes at a 45-degree angle; slightly curved c-clef, f-clef somewhat rectangular. 
Initial "S" in red, blue, green, and yellow, with detailed circular and foliage motifs. Initial is framed with a helical pattern which continues down the side of the page and across the lower margin. The letters "PIR" are given elaborate penwork in black, with green and pale yellow scalloping.

"Vellum folio from a late 15th-century Italian Gradual.

Gregorian chant for Pentecost Sunday; text from the Book of Wisdom (Sapientia), chapter 1; musical notation in black ink on 4-line red staves; sung texts in black ink.

Decoration: sung text on recto begins with a large ornately decorated initial S in red, blue and green inks followed by decorated letters P, I, and R in black, brown and red; recto numbered XXXVIII [38] in red; foot of recto includes the coat of arms (red cross atop three hills with an olive tree on each side of the hill formation) of the Benedictine monastic order of the Olivetans.

Holding in McGill Library's Rare Books and Special Collections: acquired by McGill University in 1923 funded by the Roddick Fund."
