- Description
-
From the McGill library's description: "Two separate leaves. On vellum, in latin, late 15th century gothic characters. Northern Italian (?); both leaves from the same manuscript. One column, dark-brown ink, red rubrics, red capitals and initials. Also three calligraphic initials in dark-brown ink, on the staves. Five-line staves in red with musical notation. 17-line text on 172/1r., the rest occupied by staves. 345x240 mm., writing surface 250x165 mm."
Provenance unknown; not in De Ricci.Although described by the library as Northern Italian, the rounded Praescissa hand, black/brown linework initials, and five-line red staff may point to an Iberian origin instead. Somewhat distinctive "h", with a curl descending below the text line.
1v, which is all text, has 17 lines, but folios with music do not follow this ruling. 1r has six staves; on pages with mixed text and music, the staff occupies approximately three text lines. Square notation with somewhat unevenly angled clefs; thin lines of division, which are sometimes doubled or tripled; custodes pointing upward at a sharp angle; f clef with three lozenges, two of which have a small "wing". - Selected Bibliography
