Single page from a sequentiary, used in a binding.
Liturgical Occasions

Catherine, Elizabeth of Hungary (?)

Description

Single parchment leaf apparently from a sequentiary, measuring 312 x 195 mm, with corners of the page missing owing to its use in a binding. Likely 14th century (which is also the date on Bohn's label.)

One sequence labelled for Catherine, the other (Gaude Sion) probably for Elizabeth of Hungary.

14th century Northern Textualis script, with alternating red and blue lombards for verses (which do not extend into the staff space), and a red lombard one staff in height at the opening of the Katherine sequence. Five line staff in a pale grey/brown, with the f-line highlighted in red and the c-line in a barely visible yellow. Small c and g clefs (resembling their letters) and a somewhat hook-shaped f clef; usually both relevant lines are marked with clefs. Hufnagel type notation. No custodes.

The bottom margin of the recto has a nearly illegible marking (Istadt E?), probably from the fragment's use as a binding.
The verso is much darkened from its use as a cover, and has several markings from the binding, including a partial paper label with a crossed out shelfmark (beginning with D), the title of a book on the spine (Guillelmus Lepin, Sermones Qu...(=Quadragesimales, pub.1517?)), another shelfmark (D 7--4 ?), what appears to be a date on the cover (1592?) and a monogram (HBFT?). The signature is somewhat similar to those used at Sankt Matthias in Trier, but the (apparently personal) monogram could suggest it went through private ownership before arriving at the monastic library. The origins of the chant are thus currently unknown.
